HP Proliant dl160 G6 blank screen (hanging) after restart

29 Apr

Here is an interesting issue that I’ve came across while deploying a bunch of HP Proliant DL160 G6 servers.
You restart the server and the it would hang with blank screen, the fans would be running at full speed.  To make the server boot you have to remove the power to the server and plug it bak again. This is a known issue and it was can be fixed by updating the Bios firmware of the server to Version: 2011.01.25 (B).
Resolved an issue where the system will occassionally hang early in POST with the fans at max speed with the 12LFF hard disk backplane installed.

No UUID or Serial number on HP server

23 Jan

Here is interesting that happened while I was trying to image the HP server.
I could  not understand why the server would not appear in HP RDP the server is perfectly functioning but HP RDP just would not show it and therefor I could not image it.
When I’ve logged into ILO I’ve noticed that there were not Serial and Product numbers. Also UUID was all zeros.

HP: Host is unnamed in ILO

17 Feb

I am using HP Integrated lights out(ILO) management a lot to managed Proliant servers. It always worked fine, but only with Windows OS. If I was trying to connect to servers ILO that is running Unix/Linux/VMware I was not seeing the server name. The ILO page was displaying ‘host is unnamed’.
ILO_name

Finaly I’ve found what was missing.
I have no problems pinging the host by its name. But when I’ve tried to resolve the name from IP, I found the problem. The name was not resolved and that was pointing that there is no PTR record. After creating the PTR record the name also started appearing in ILO. The same problem also effects HP System Insight Manager(SIM).
Note: The name will not appear instantly after you create PTR record.

HP: Negative pings ???

01 Feb

I’ve ran into interesting problem today wile configuring HP SIM. I found out that the network is not stable. So I started troubleshooting by pinging servers and this is what I’ve got.
negative ping
I have negative pings, which does not make sense. So the first thing that popped to my mind was firmware. After upgrading NIC firmware the problem disappeared.

The server is HP Proliant BL25p G2 and NIC is Broadcom NC737i
