If this action cannot be performed or fails it will display unknown deployment status in SCCM Software Updates. (see image image below)<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kozeniauskas.com\/itblog\/files\/2009\/01\/u1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-316\" title=\"u1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kozeniauskas.com\/itblog\/files\/2009\/01\/u1-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nSo let see what is happening in the scan logs. Open up <strong><em>ScanAgent.log<\/em><\/strong>on the client machine in there i see 2 errors and they appear at the time the &#8216;Software updates scan cycle&#8217; action is running:<br \/>\n<em>CScanTool::Execute- Failed at AddUpdateSource, error = 0x80040692<br \/>\n&#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; -Scan Failed for ToolUniqueID={DEC3664C-82F3-45FE-9929-8CE5566F42A4}, with Error=0x80040692<\/em><\/p>\n<p>As we already know the Scan does not work and the log only proves it. Although without telling us the reason.<br \/>\nSo next I&#8217;ve checked <strong><em>WUAHandler.log <\/em><\/strong>and here I founf the following lines:<br \/>\n<em>Its a WSUS Update Source type ({DEC3664C-82F3-45FE-9929-8CE5566F42A4}), adding it.\u00a0WUAHandler\u00a014\/01\/2009 14:09:00\u00a0908 (0x038C)<br \/>\nEnabling WUA Managed server policy to use server: <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/sccm.testdomain.ie:8530\"><em>http:\/\/sccm.testdomain.ie:8530<\/em><\/a><em> WUAHandler\u00a014\/01\/2009 14:09:00\u00a0908 (0x038C)<br \/>\nWaiting for 2 mins for Group Policy to notify of WUA policy change&#8230;\u00a0WUAHandler\u00a014\/01\/2009 14:09:00\u00a0908 (0x038C)<br \/>\nGroup policy settings were overwritten by a higher authority (Domain Controller) to: Server <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/sccm:8530\"><em>http:\/\/sccm:8530<\/em><\/a><em> and Policy ENABLED\u00a0WUAHandler\u00a014\/01\/2009 14:09:06\u00a0908 (0x038C)<br \/>\nFailed to Add Update Source for WUAgent of type (2) and id ({DEC3664C-82F3-45FE-9929-8CE5566F42A4}). Error = 0x80040692.\u00a0WUAHandler\u00a014\/01\/2009 14:09:06\u00a0908 (0x038C)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>According to these lines at first the client has <a href=\"http:\/\/sccm.testdomain.ie:8530\/\">http:\/\/sccm.testdomain.ie:8530<\/a> as a web server but then this is being overwritten by domain\u00a0Group Policy\u00a0and changed to <a href=\"http:\/\/sccm:8530\/\">http:\/\/sccm:8530<\/a> and then fails.<br \/>\nBoth addresses are pointing to the same server but for some reason it does not work. To make it work I&#8217;ve change Windows Updates \u00a0Group Policy from <a href=\"http:\/\/sccm:8530\/\">http:\/\/sccm:8530<\/a> to <a href=\"http:\/\/sccm.testdomain.ie:8530\/\">http:\/\/sccm.testdomain.ie:8530<\/a> once that was done I initiated &#8216;Software updates scan cycle&#8217; action and monitored the logs. Everything was fine this time and the\u00a0software updates deployment status\u00a0has changed. This allowed machines to receive updates.<\/p>\n<p>So this time I&#8217;ve learned that SCCM prefers FQDNs.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Here are my finding why updates cannot be deployed to the clients.
